Host City and Institution:

Manchester has a population of 2,240,230 and is the United Kingdom's third largest city. Forming part of the English Core Cities Group, and often described as the "Capital of the North," Manchester today is a centre of the arts, the media, higher education and commerce. Manchester is regarded as the best place in the UK to locate a business, and is the fastest-growing city economically.  It is the third most visited city in the United Kingdom by foreign visitors and is now often considered to be the second city of the UK.  Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and among its other sporting connections are its two Premier League football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester

Manchester was the world's first industrialized city and played a central role during the Industrial Revolution.  Manchester City Centre is now on a tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, because of the network of canals and mills constructed during its 19th century development. Due to the large number of universities located in Manchester there are about 100,000 college students, making Manchester a vibrant city with a touch of English charm.

Manchester Metropolitan University is the fourth largest university in Britain after the Open University, the University of London and the University of Manchester. The University now has over 21,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students. It offers hundreds of courses in over 70 subjects, with five campuses in Manchester, as well as two in Crewe and Alsager in Cheshire.  It is organized into eight faculties: Art and Design, Health, Psychology and Social Care, Humanities, Law and Social Science, Science and Engineering, Business School and the Institute of Education.

Country:

Big Ben, Queen Elizabeth, Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, Stonehenge, the Beetles, Coldplay, pubs, parliament, Prince William, the Rolling Stones, the London Bridge are just some of the things that people think of when they think of Merry Old England!! The largest and most populous country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, England became a unified state during the 10th century and takes its name from the Angles, one of a number of Germanic tribes who settled in the territory during the 5th and 6th centuries. The capital city of England is London, which is the largest city in Great Britain, and the largest city in the European Union.

England ranks among the world's most influential and far-reaching centers of cultural development. It was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. England was the world's first parliamentary democracyand consequently many constitutional, governmental and legal innovations that had their origin in England have been widely adopted by other nations.
